The most gruesome and graphic fantasy horror movies can't hold a candle to the horrific violence and psychopathic cruelty that is business as usual in slaughterhouses around the world. Owners of these hellholes of torture pointedly keep their facilities out of populated areas, away from people so no one sees the depravity that goes on inside. Powerful politics come into play with many countries enforcing "Ag Gag" laws which make it a felony or an act of terrorism to even report what goes on inside those places.
Think about that - it is legal to perpetrate vicious violence against innocent animals, but it is a felony for undercover investigators to REPORT it.
Animals are routinely stabbed, gouged, kicked, beaten, snatched up and slammed around if small enough. The larger ones are prodded with painful electric prods or scooped up in the buckets of front-end loaders like garbage. One common way to kill the smaller animals is to grab them by their legs, swing them hard and viciously slam their heads against concrete or metal posts until they die from blunt force trauma.
But before they reach the nightmares awaiting them in slaughterhouses, their entire existence is a living hell. In the course of animals' miserable lives in factory farms they are maliciously castrated with no anesthesia because diners can't have testosterone making their pork chops taste pungent. And castration keeps animals more docile and more controllable.
To make them less likely to gouge others, cows and goats endure having their horns sawn off which, because horns are part of an animal's sinus system, is as painful to them as having our own noses sawn off, again, with no anesthesia. The teeth of pigs are often broken and violently yanked out with pliers, with no anesthesia, and which hurts the pigs as much as it would hurt a human. Why break and pull teeth or saw off horns? Because the degrading conditions in which these animals are forced to live - crammed together and denied any expression of even the most basic instincts - cause them to lash out at one another in frustration, biting and gouging one another.
Chickens endure having their beaks cut or seared off for similar reasons as the other animals mentioned above. Chickens kept in close confinement will peck at each other out of desperate frustration.
Cows' tails are important and sensitive parts of their bodies, used to swat away flies. But this swatting also gets in the way of dairy workers or other farm personnel, and so the fix for that is to take a pair of bolt cutters and hack the tail off, with no anesthesia.
Farmed animals have no agency - their bodies are not their own. The varied and hideous atrocities done to farmed animals, all the mutilations that are done to keep the animals in submission, are nothing short of psychopathic. And yet they are industry standards. Animals are branded with red hot irons; their ears are slashed and chunks cut out to identify them and mark them for their dying day. Animals are painfully ear-tagged like merchandise and warehoused like despised criminals. All are innocent and undeserving of any of the nasty manipulations forced upon them. All these aggressive mutilations occur before animals ever reach the slaughterhouses. Once there, it gets worse.
In slaughterhouses, the fear and panic of animals facing brutal deaths is palpable. They know what is coming to them. The demented hatefulness and utter disregard for anything resembling respect for life in these hellholes cannot be overstated. The animals' cries and screams are ignored. Animals are treated like commodities, mere objects, exploited and used by the trillions to feed our selfish appetites. We don't even need to eat animals, at all, to thrive, and yet we persist in this horrific ritual of abuse of them.
Animals die by many diabolical methods - being hoisted by one rear leg upside down in the air, painfully dislocating their hip, and having their throat slashed and left to bleed to death, choking and suffocating in their own blood; being hoisted upside down then being dunked in scalding water or water with electrical current running through it. Pigs are gassed to death, screaming in agony, in gas chambers as the insides of their lungs are seared. Various animals are bludgeoned to death - smashed in the head with metal pipes. All of this goes on while the animals are still conscious and aware of what is happening to them.
Animals are sometimes supposed to be stunned into unconsciousness before actually being slaughtered, but often these stunning measures fail and only end up causing more agonizing pain and emotional trauma for the duration of the time between botched stunning and actual killing. The animals remain fully conscious.
Fully Conscious. As they are hacked apart. Fully Conscious.
Sometimes animals are fully aware, fully feeling as their feet are brutally chopped off or their skin is slashed and forcibly peeled off their head and body. Processing line speeds in these facilities are pushed to go faster and faster, and so errors resulting in unfathomable misery are plentiful. And no one working in those places cares.
The hideousness of slaughterhouse practices cannot be overstated. It is truly a horror show.
This essay lists some of the brutal immoral crimes we commit against innocent animals but it would be an awfully long book to describe them all.
Slaughterhouse workers must make themselves emotionally numb to the reality of what they are doing - killing and killing and killing. To actually care for any of these animals would create a crack in a harsh mental facade that would lead to a nervous breakdown, many of which happen anyway. PTSD, domestic violence, alcohol and drug abuse are rampant among slaughterhouse workers.
People like to believe the maliciously false marketing lies that tell us animals are killed "humanely" but get real - there is nothing humane going on in any slaughterhouse or factory farm, and we know this deep inside.
Consumers are purposely detached from the brutality of where their food comes from when they shop in serene, comfortable grocery stores, perusing free-range or "humanely raised" pieces of disembodied flesh packaged in neat, clean, shiny plastic wrapping while soothing music plays in the store background. The buying experience could not be further from the hell on Earth the animals endure to end up in those tidy packages.
Animal agriculture is one horror show whose run needs to end. We need to shut down this gory production. Eating animals is obviously a nightmare for the animals, and it is clear that it is also the leading cause of massive disease in humans, and environmental devastation killing the planet.
Eating animals IS death. On every level.
Time to face up to the demented, violent, psychopathic reality that we are funding each time we plunk down cash for a burger, or cheese or eggs, or bacon, chops or roasts. Those body parts were once living, breathing, sensitive animals. None of them wanted to die and none of them deserved to be abused.
We are worse than hideous monsters for torturing and killing them by the billions as we do.
It is so easy, healthy, delicious and fun to learn how to eat a plant-based diet. Stop supporting the most hateful show on Earth - animal agriculture. Go vegan.
